W-CONSTRAINTS IN 2D QUANTUM-GRAVITY

Using the formalism of the higher KdV hierarchies, we show that the square root of the partition function of the multi-matrix model is subject to an infinite set of constraints. These constraints satisfy the Virasoro or W algebra, as was conjectured recently. We discuss the implications of these equations for the different critical points, and show that when translated in terms of macroscopic operators, they lead to the loop equations of the multi-matrix models.
