An alkaline psychrotrophic Bacillus sp. was isolated from glacier materials. The strain was found to excrete an alkaline serine protease when cultivated at 18-degrees-C and pH 10.0. The purified protease had a molecular mass of approximately 27 kDa and an isoelectric point > 9.5. Optimal activity was exhibited at 60-degrees-C and pH 11.0. The specific azocaseinolytic, activity of the protease was twice as high as the specific activity of Subtilisin Carlsberg.
