Piezoelectric cadmium sulphide thin films for use as ultrasonic transducers in the microwave region, have been grown by evaporation on to a range of substrate materials. The optimum growth conditions have been investigated, and found to agree with those stated by several previous authors. The reasons for these conditions producing good films have been clarified by a study of their orientation and optical transmission properties. A discussion is given of the necessary orientational properties for the generation of longitudinal and shear modes.
