摘要
The hard and soft acids and bases (HSAB) principle closely relates to the adsorption of an anion on the oxidized metal surface and the formation of its complex with a highly oxidized metallic ion. Inhibition effects of several organic anions on passive film breakdown of iron in a borate buffer solution at pH 8.49 in the presence of chloride ions were investigated on the basis of the principle. Organic anions 3-octylthiopropionate, N-dodecanoyl sarcosinate, oleate, benzoate and 8-quinolinolate ions were examined as inhibitors. Except for the 8-quinolinate ion, they shifted the pitting potential in the positive direction, indicating inhibition of passive layer. 8-Quinolinarte ions stimulated the breakdown because a non-adherent deposit of its chelate compound with Fe3+ flaked off the passive film surface.
