A cDNA clone, TomA92B9, encoding a putative 15-kDa glycine-rich protein from tomato anthers, was isolated and characterized. The gene is present in one copy per haploid genome. The mRNA accumulated predominantly in the tapetal layer of stamens from early meiosis through tetrad release. The protein deduced from this clone has an N-terminal hydrophobic domain with the characteristics of a secretory signal. The mature protein contains 32% of Gly residues. On the basis of the analysis of gene's expression pattern and its primary structure, it is concluded that this gene product is a novel glycine-rich protein.
