NO adsorption on differently pretreated pure ZnO and Pt/ZnO samples has been investigated by FTIR spectroscopy. Both the vibrational modes of the adsorbed species and the changes in the IR transmission of the samples are discussed. On mildly reduced Pt/ZnO samples NO is adsorbed molecularly on Pt sites, while on pure ZnO nitrite and nitrate species are produced; no changes of IR transmission are observed on both samples. On strongly reduced Pt/ZnO and ZnO samples NO adsorption produces a large increase of IR transmission, showing that NO dissociation occurs. Moreover, different species of adsorbed NO are observed on Pt sites modified by alloying with Zn or by O atoms produced in NO dissociation.
