EFFECT OF ENALAPRIL ON CONGESTIVE-HEART-FAILURE TREATED WITH DIURETICS IN ELDERLY PATIENTS WITH PRIOR MYOCARDIAL-INFARCTION AND NORMAL LEFT-VENTRICULAR EJECTION FRACTION

Normal left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction occurred in 68 of 166 elderly patients (41%) with congestive heart failure (CHF) and coronary artery disease.1 The angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor enalapril has been beneficial in the treatment of CHF associated with abnormal LV ejection fraction.2-6 However, to the best of our knowledge, the effect of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor therapy on CHF associated with prior myocardial infarction and normal LV ejection fraction was not previously reported. In this study, we present data comparing the effects of 3 months with and without enalapril therapy on CHF treated with diuretics in elderly patients with prior myocardial infarction and normal LV ejection fraction. © 1993.
