阴山—燕山地区的大青山组/后城组/土城子组为巨厚的紫色粗碎屑岩沉积序列,时限为154-137Ma。燕山东部以安山质火山岩为主,燕山西部片麻岩和岩浆岩居多,阴山地区则主要为前寒武系变质岩。沉积物源(砾石)组分具有明显的地区性岩石组合特点。砂岩Qm-F-Lt图解显示其来源于再旋回造山物源区。不同地区古水流特征显示局地汇聚水流体系特征,暗示晚侏罗世—早白垩世华北北缘发育一系列相对独立的中小型盆地。沉积物碎屑锆石ICP-MS U-Pb定年结果表明,辽西土城子组具有115.2-144.2Ma、199.4-380.3Ma和1522-2629.1Ma 3个年龄区间。阴山地区大青山组时代主要为1685-2325Ma,中侏罗统召沟组为1790.2-2471.2Ma,中上侏罗统长汉沟组为627.7-1971.2Ma和2003.9-2245.4Ma。燕山西部尙义后城组为206.7-371Ma,上侏罗统—下白垩统阎家窑组为225-364.7Ma和2643.9-2271.9Ma。辽西土城子组的物源主要来自燕山东部的二叠纪-三叠纪岩浆岩;尚义后城组和阎家窑组物源来自华北北部和兴蒙造山区晚古生代—早中生代岩浆岩及前寒武系;阴山地区召沟组—长汉沟组—大青山组物源来自阴山南麓前寒武系。辽西土城子组中发育基性(辉绿岩)岩脉和碱性岩体,大青山组/后城组/土城子组发育西向巨型风成砂(带)沉积(137Ma)等都指示了区域性伸展的构造背景。
