从２０００年开始,随着经济增长的放缓和股市的波动,共同基金的增长出现了停滞的局面。《纽约时报》和《商业周刊》的评论说,“共同基金疲惫的迹象到处可见”。“投资者正失去对共同基金的胃口”。《巴伦》(Ｂａｒｒｏｎ’ｓ)周刊也认为,“基金业正快速步入中年”。所有这些评论与预言都有一个相同主题,即经过２９年无以伦比的耀眼增长之后,美国共同基金业将步入成熟,并因此进入一个长期的缓慢增长期。
