Effects of whole venom and venom fractions from several Australian spiders, including Atrax (Hadronyche) species, when injected into insects

摘要
The venoms of seven Australian spiders were bioassayed for toxicity to insects. Final instar Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) larvae and representatives from five other insect orders were used as test insects. All crude venoms possessed some toxicity to insects and after high-performance liquid chromatography fractionation yielded at least one fraction with toxicity comparable with that of the crude venom. Several venoms caused rapid paralysis, though this was often not permanent. Continuous and uncontrolled movements ending in death were caused by toxins in Atrax/Hadronyche spider venoms.
