摘要
The effects of water on adhesive joints are described primarily by reference to work carried out at the Defence Research Agency and which has included the use of accelerated test methods. Water can affect both the physical and mechanical properties of the adhesive itself and also the nature of the interface or interphase that exists between it and the substrate. Both aspects are discussed and, in particular, the existence of residual strength in joints is considered where the adhesive is apparently susceptible to displacement from adherend by water. The concept of a critical water content below which some otherwise water-sensitive joints remain unaffected is also considered.
