Polariton model of linear optical absorption by quantum wells: Inadequacy of perturbation theory

A polariton theory of linear optical absorption nonperturbative in the Hamiltonian coupling the exciton-crystal-ground-state transition dipole moment and the electromagnetic field in quantum wells demonstrates the inadequacy of the standard perturbative result (Fermi's Golden Rule) at resonance. Due to the concurrent reradiation by photoexcited excitons, the absorption spectrum is renormalized such that it vanishes identically in the absence of nonradiative broadening mechanisms.
