A 2,5-dimethoxytetrahydrofuran, fulvanol, has been extracted from Hemerocallis fulva var. kwanso along with fulvanines(double dagger), 2,5-dihydrofuryl-gamma-lactams. The structure of fulvanol has been established as 3-hydroxy-methyl-2,5-dimethoxy-3,4-dihydroxytetrahydrofuran by the H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra. The structure of fulvanol is closely related to the branched-chain tetrofuranose apiose, occurring in the form of UDP-glycoside or as other cell components. [double dagger Fulvanines were first named for 2,5-dihydrofuryl-gamma-lactam derivatives. The authors are concerned about possible confusion with fulvanin, cf. J. Nat. Prod. 56, 527 (1993), which is a name given to a new sesquiterpene.]
