Large arrays of escape suppressed spectrometers for nuclear structure experiments

摘要
The design and performance of large arrays of escape suppressed germanium spectrometers is described. These arrays have revolutionized the gamma-ray spectroscopic study of the atomic nucleus. The sensitivity of the current generation of arrays is such that it is possible to study weak features, with an intensity of 10(-5) of the total reaction cross section, associated with exotic phenomena at extremes of nuclear spin and deformation. Recent highlights of the physics of superdeformed states and band termination states are briefly reviewed to give a flavour of the power of these spectrometers.
