On the Interpretation of Colloidal Quantum-Dot Absorption Spectra

Colloidal QPbSe dispersions were studied to discuss two issues in the interpretation of absorption spectra of colloidal quantum dots using the absorption coefficient of small particles. Small aliquots were dried after synthesis under a strong nitrogen flow and dispersed in 1 ml of CCl4 to measure the absorption spectrum. Equal amounts were dissolved in 100ml of HNO3 to determine the nanocrystal concentration with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. It was found that the strong increase of the absorbance at low wavelengths is not due to Rayleigh scattering. The result reflects a strong increase in the local field factor at these energies. A shift of the absorbance peaks with size is a clear sign of quantum confinement, and comparison between experimental data and theoretical calculations.
