We report on electroluminescence (EL) from a surface emitting (planar) metal-polymer-metal structure. Two gold electrodes (separated by 20 mu m) were evaporated on free-standing films of poly(phenylene vinylene), PPV. Polarized light emission was observed from tensile drawn PPV films. The planar structure enables spatial resolution of the emission from devices based on conjugated polymers. Spatially resolved EC measurements show that the recombination zone extends over about 10 mu m. The emitting region is asymmetric with the maximum closer to the electron injecting contact.
