Optimum topology of structural supports

摘要
Considering the reasons for the limited application of structural optimization to frame structures, especially where mass minimization is not the primary objective, a different approach is presented which aims to determine the optimum topological locations of supports or columns in a structure, with the objective of minimizing the maximum displacement or moment. This approach ensures enhanced structural integrity and serviceability without affecting the sizes of the structural members based on practical considerations and code restrictions. The problem is solved by a direct constrained minimization technique using nonlinear mathematical programming and finite element analysis. Various aspects of the problem are demonstrated for the primative problem of a simply-supported beam. The deflection minimization problem is compared with the moment minimization problem. Application examples are presented, which clearly demonstrate the usefulness of the idea for structural design engineers. Copyright (C) 1996 published by Elsevier Science Ltd.
