Chlorine kills the microorganisms in municipal drinking water that can cause illnesses, but using this chemical can bring about some inadvertent side reactions and create associated health risks. Edward Urbansky and Matthew Magnuson at the U.S. EPA discuss how researchers have analyzed those byproducts and dealt with alternate strategies in the past 25 years.
