Formation of Li- and Mg-doped LiCoO2 powders:: a BET analysis

Li- and Mg-doped LiCoO2 powders were prepared and were characterized using a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. The amount of Li2CO3 remaining after calcination was determined by leaching in water. Density was measured and powder surface areas were determined before and after leaching in water from N2 gas-adsorption data. X-ray measurements were also performed using an Ital-Structures 1S-86 diffractometer. At 800 °C, the specific surface area ratio of the Li-doped powders was found to decrease with Li/Co ratio, whereas, at 700 °C, it is almost independent of Li/Co ratio. Regarding Mg-doped LiCoO2, a strong decrease in the specific surface area with respect to undoped LiCoO2 was noted starting at low temperatures (700 °C).
