摘要
Eukaryotic unicellular microalgae with cells walls composed of a composite of organic material and silica are known as diatoms. Diatoms are distinct in that they have diverse structures on the nano and microscale. They are a dominant contributor to biosilica formation in the oceans as they have colonized marine and freshwater environments and adapted to living in soils and ice. They are classified into two general structural kinds that include cells with rotational symmetry and those with bilateral symmetry. They also play in genetic manipulation when integrated with DNA.
