摘要：

The technical success of liver transplantation has led to application of this life-saving procedure to patients with a variety of irreversible acute and chronic liver diseases. The discrepancy between the availability of donor organs and the number of potential liver transplant recipients has continued to worsen, underscoring the key role of the selection and timing processes. The current indications for and contraindications to liver transplantation and the complex variables determining optimal timing are reviewed.
