Simultaneous measurement of recoil velocity and alignment of S(D-1(2)) atoms in photodissociation of OCS

The recoil velocity and alignment of S(D-1(2)) atoms produced by ultraviolet photodissociation of OCS have been measured by a two-dimensional (2D) ion imaging method. The polarization dependence of the 2D images has been analyzed quantum mechanically, and helicity distributions have been determined for different velocity components of S(D-1(2)) atoms. The results show that the dissociation of OCS --> CO((1) Sigma(+)) + S(D-1(2)) occurs via two major pathways, and both of these processes produce the asymptotic states in A' and A '' symmetry.
