Pyrolysis of Ru-3(mu-dppm)(CO)(9)(PPh(3)): Formation of novel Ru-4 and Ru-3 clusters

Heating Ru-3(mu-dppm)(CO)(9)(PPh(3)) (2) for 90 min in refluxing toluene resulted in the formation of Ru-4(mu(4)-PPh)(mu(4)-PPh(2)C(6)H(4)CO)(mu-PPh(2)CH(2))(CO)(8) (3) and Ru-3{mu(3)-PPh(C6H4)}(mu-PPh(2)CH(2))(mu-PPh(2))(mu-CO)(CO)(6) (4) as the major products (41%); other complexes identified were Ru-3{mu(3)-PPhCH(2)PPh(C6H4)}(CO)(9) (5) and Ru-2(mu-PPhC(6)H(4)PPhCH(2))(CO)(6-n)(PPh(3))(n) [n = 1(6), O(7)]. The transformations involve oxidative addition of aromatic C-H and P-C bonds to the cluster, elimination of benzene and carbonylation of the aryl-Ru bond, as well as cluster disproportionation. X-ray structures of 3, 4 and 6 are presented.
