摘要
Nonspecific gastrointestinal symptoms are present in both inflammatory and noninflammatory conditions. Noninvasive diagnostic tools include the fecal markers, calprotectin and lactoferrin. These are stable proteins that are present in the stool of patients with active and chronic inflammation. Studies have shown their ability to discriminate in a reproducible fashion the presence of inflammation with excellent correlation to endoscopic findings. These markers can also be used for predicting a disease flare as well as monitoring the success of treatment. Noninvasive stool markers are a convenient and reliable clinical tool that can be used in clinical practice.
