This article reviews 24 of the newly described and four of the older emerging human species of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM). These NTM species include rapidly growing mycobacteria and slowly growing species, many of which have been recognized as a result of the recent molecular technological advances in the laboratory. Many of these species have been discussed only briefly in previous publications. Emphasis is placed on those species that are clinically significant or potentially clinically significant.
