This study compared the mechanism of lumen enlargement between direct stenting versus predilation stenting using volumetric intravacular ultrasound methodology in 60 native coronary lesions treated with the same stent design and the same stent length. We showed that the mechanisms of lumen enlargement during stent implantation do not appear to be different in both groups, with similar plaque compression/embolization and a more even axial redistribution of the plaque with direct stenting than with predilation stenting.
