The solvatochromism of poly-3-octylthiophene which was prepared and separated into two fractions having the same regioregularity, but different molecular weight was examined. The polymer was synthesized from 3-octylthiophene via oxidative reaction with FeCl3. Polyalkylthiophene are claimed to be organized in self-π stacking configuration. The strong dependence of UV-Vis absorption properties on molecular weight may imply that for polyalkylthiophene π stacking occurs intramolecularly, rather than intermolecularly.
