Postprocedure creatine kinase-MB elevation and baseline left ventricular dysfunction predict one-year mortality after percutaneous coronary intervention

Cardiac enzyme elevation after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has been associated with diffuse atherosclerosis and increased late mortality even after successful revascularization.(1-8) Many studies have also emphasized the dominant prognostic significance of left ventricular (LV) systolic function in patients with coronary artery disease.(9-13) After coronary artery bypass surgery, increases in late mortality correlated closely with falling values of LV ejection fraction (EF).(14) Furthermore, decreased LVEF and congestive heart failure have been found to predict in-hospital mortality after pCI.(15-17) This study examined the interaction between decreased LVEF and creatine kinase (CK)-MB elevation after PCI.
