Compared to the chemistry of typical carbon- or halogen-substituted carbenes, which have been extensively investigated, the chemistry of heteroatom-substituted carbenes is considerably more diverse and complex. Although much of the work is new and has been attracting considerable attention in recent years, there remains much to be explored in this area.
