This article reviews the current trends and methods used to treat Graves' disease. The modern history of the treatment of Graves' disease illustrates the history of modern surgery in Europe and the United States. Factors influencing the decision to choose between subtotal and total thyroidectomy are discussed with reference to recurrence and complications of each procedure. The management of Graves' disease in patients with eye disease or coexisting malignancy also is detailed.
