Routine work-up of hepatic diseases is performed by regular laboratory tests which indicate changes in the metabolic capacity of various hepatic cellular systems. A C-13-based breath test may offer further selective characterisation of hepatic enzymes by means of a non-invasive technique. We present an overview on current test systems and their potential relevance in the assessment of hepatic diseases.
