Design and performance characteristics of an integrated high-capacity DETF-based force sensor

Resonant structure load cells can have significant advantages over conventional load cells using strain gauges. The novel high-capacity sensor described in this paper utilizes a double-ended tuning fork (DETF) of low capacity and an integrated support structure. The resonance frequency of the piezoelectrically excited DETF is a function of the applied axial force. Design and performance characteristics of a 20 kN DETF-based load cell with a repeatability of 0.02% of the range are described. The finite-element method has been utilized and a mathematical model has been developed to define the load sharing between the DETF and the support structure.
