There is no worldwide consensus of an algorithm for the radical treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Surgical resection, liver transplantation and, recently, local ablation therapies achieve high curative rates in selected patients. However, recurrence of HCC remains a major problem. This review provides an overview of the current surgical treatment options available for patients with HCC. (c) 2005 Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.
