摘要：

The design and management of cities are critical to global sustainability. Measures of urban sustainability need to provide clear signals as to how urban patterns are affecting the environment and the natural resource base. Urban planners and managers need to recognize that their decisions affect ecological systems far beyond the city boundaries or the region. Only then will they be able to design tools to monitor urban sustainability and build sustainable cities.
