This article discusses the use of serotonin,, agonists in the treatment of acute migraine. Specifically, the author reviews the efficacy and safety of this class of drugs with sumatriptan as the main focus. Agents under clinical trial are also discussed. Recurrence of migraine, long-term usage, and side effects of serotonin(1D) agonists are included in the review. The article also discusses alternative medications, such as intranasal lidocaine, intravenous chlorpromazine, and intravenous prochlorperazine, for acute treatment of migraine. The limited role of narcotics and sedatives is also mentioned.
