Surface spectroscopic study of basic sites on carbon blacks

Commercial furnace carbon blacks with a low oxygen concentration at the surface were studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Oxygen-containing groups and the basal planes of graphene layers were investigated. The highest concentration of basic sites was found for the samples with the narrowest graphite peaks. The ability of graphene layers to donate π electrons was related to their structure.
