Requirements for production and use of certified reference materials for speciation analysis: A European commission perspective

This paper describes requirements for the preparation of Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) for speciation analysis, arising from experience gained within a series of interlaboratory studies organized by the European Commission. A range of chemical compounds in various environmental matrices were targeted, e.g, organotins in sediment and mussel, methylmercury in fish and sediment, As-species in fish, trimethyllead in artificial rainwater and urban dust, Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in lyophilized solution and welding dust, and Se(IV) and Se(VI) in artificial freshwater.
