This paper reports on the recent progress towards the development of power composite structures capable of energy harvesting and storage in addition to load bearing. The process of physically embedding all-solid-state thin-film lithium-ion energy cells into a carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) and the performance of the resulting power composites are reported. The embedded thin-film lithium energy cells did not significantly alter the mechanical properties of the composite (modulus and strength) under quasi-static uniaxial loading conditions. The embedded energy cells performed at baseline charge/discharge levels up to a loading of about 50% of the CFRP tensile strength. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
