摘要：

An overview of thermotropic ionic liquid crystals is given to build a bridge between the research in the field of liquid crystals and that of ionic liquids. The literature is covered up to August 2005. Descriptions are presented for mesogenic salts with organic cations, metal carboxylates, phosphates and phosphonates, alkali-metal ion complexes of neutral ligands, ionic metallomesogens, ionic polymer liquid crystals, and applications for ionic liquid crystals.
