A novel approach to the matrix Riccati equation solution: An application to optimal control of interconnected power systems

摘要
A novel computational approach for the solution of the matrix Riccati (M-R) equation is presented in this work. The new approach is computationally simple and reliable, and requires a lesser number of iterations to converge to the solution of M-R equation. The approach involves the novelty of Fernando and Nicholson's algorithm [ 1] for the initialization of the iterative process. The optimal automatic generation control (AGC) regulators based on the proposed approach have been designed for interconnected power systems and implemented in the wake of 1% load disturbance in one of the areas. The implementation of the designed optimal AGC regulators exhibits an appreciable improvement in system dynamic performance. The time response plots demonstrate the same effect on system dynamic performance with the implementation of optimal AGC regulators designed using the proposed algorithm and the algorithm reported by Fernando and Nicholson. However, from the design point of view, the proposed algorithm has the novel features of being faster and more reliable in converging to the solution of M-R equation as compared to the algorithm proposed in [1].
