摘要
Many writers have criticized the influence of tourism on urban neighborhoods, believing it homogenizes formerly distinct places. Others argue that it creates the atmosphere of an upscale shopping mall and, in doing so, displaces diverse populations. Yet other claim that in places of historical significance, history tends to be simplified or completely erased. All these criticisms can be applied to Cannery Row in Monterey, California. However, a close examination of the Row also reveals the inconsistencies and gaps in tourism's impact. The city shows a resilience to the standardizing influence of global tourism, but it also shows some of the challenges to balancing the needs of hosts and guests. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd.
