Electron-spin-echo envelope-modulation study of the distance between Nd3+ ions and Al3+ ions in the co-doped SiO2 glasses

Using the electron-spin-echo envelope-modulation method of the pulsed ESR technique, the spatial distribution of Al3+ ions around Nd3+ ions have been investigated in Nd-AL co-doped SiO2 glasses prepared by plasma torch chemical vapour deposition of SiCl4, NdCl3 and AlCl3 in order to obtain structural evidence for the solvation shell model proposed for a co-doping effect based on the optical study. A clear modulation from Al-27 (I = 5/2, 100%) nuclei near Nd3+ ions in a three-pulse-echo decay was observed. The amplitude and the damping behaviour of the modulation observed have been compared with those calculated, supporting the notion that Al3+ ions preferentially exist close to Nd3+ ions.
