Animal danders

The details of exposure to animal dander are important in the investigation and management of allergic disease because of the pervasive role of animals in many people's lives and the relationship of these allergens to asthma. Evidence has shown that animals, particularly cats, can induce tolerance. Monoclonal antibody-based ELISA and isolation of specific allergens from different animals has enabled measurement of these allergens in dust and in the air. The challenge is to find the optimal technique for measurement of airborne particles, which are the primary route of exposure. Evidence suggests that although primary avoidance of animal dander may be effective, secondary avoidance is possible and should be part of treatment.
