Hypertension in diabetes mellitus

Diabetic patients have an increased risk for arterial hypertension. The association of these conditions is caused by multiple mechanisms, including renal, hormonal, and hemodynamic factors. Ideal antihypertensive treatment should be directed to the prevention of microvascular and macrovascular complications. Effective therapy decreases the progression of diabetic nephropathy. Therapeutic approaches vary depending on the type of diabetes, the presence of diabetic complications, and other comorbid conditions.
