Stored muon beams: the way forward in neutrino and Higgs physics

摘要
This paper describes the challenges and opportunities which stored muon beams present. The difficulties of obtaining appropriate intensities using high-power proton sources are discussed, including issues such as muon production and cooling. We show how a lon-baseline neutrino experiment using a stored muon beam of some 20-50 GeV could allow measurements of the entire neutrino mixing matrix, including the CP-violating component. Furthermore, a muon collider presents an ideal way of studying the Higgs boson, particularly if supersymmetry is a useful description of nature. Again CP-violation in this sector, a very different region from the standard model, may be accessible.
