A study of poly(hydroxyalkanoate)s by quantitative P-31 NMR spectroscopy: Molecular weight and chain cleavage

A stock solution was prepared by dissolving approximately 400 mg of Bisphenol A (BPA) in pyridine, adding 5.5 mg of Cr(acac)3 and bringing the total volume to 10 mL. The polymers were dissolved in CDCl3 heating gently if necessary with concentration of 50-100 mg/mL. A 400 μL of the polymer solution and 40 μL of the stock solution were transferred into a 5 mm NMR tube. The mixture was left to react overnight. Quantitative paramagnetic nuclear magnetic resonance (PNMR) spectroscopy was found to be a valuable tool for the determination of number-average molecular weight of poly(hydroxy alkanoate) homo- and copolymers.
