Chemical synthesis of highly conducting polypyrrole nanofiber film

Chemical synthesis of highly conducting polypyrrole having nanofibrillar morphology was analyzed. Pyrrole was added to a cooled, magnetically stirred solution of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) in aqueous 1.0 M HCl. Air drying yielded a compact film on the surface of the filter paper that could be readily peeled off and cut using a blade. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image of this film showed a nonwoven mat composed entirely of nanofibers of polypyrrole having diameter in the 20-40 nm range. It was found that the polypyrrole film is spectroscopically similar to polypyrrole nanofibers synthesized without CTAB.
