As the intensity and duration of chemotherapy are increased to improve remission rates and cancer-free survival, the greater the need for central venous access for nutritional, transfusional, and microbial support. Infections related to these devices will likewise increase as will the cost to manage complications and prolonged hospital stalis. A general overview ru of the pathogenesis, diagnosis, management,and expected outcomes of venous access device-related infections is presented, along with all algorithm to determine the need for catheter removal or retention.
