A mutant of Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstahi producing a dark-brown pigment was generated following UV irradiation of the culture. This pigment was characterized as melanin, based on preliminary diagnostic tests, UV, and FTIR spectral analysis. The mutant was more resistant to UV light than the parent strain and had greater insecticidal activity toward diamondback moths, Plutella xylostella. (C) 1996 Academic Press, Inc.
