Vertical banded gastroplasty and vertical silastic ring gastroplasty represent 20% of present operations for surgical treatment for morbid obesity. Technical improvements recently include the application of laparoscopy and the availability of a six-row endolinear cutting stapler to divide the partition. Long-term data reveal that many patients fail to comply fully with necessary eating behavior modifications to sustain a 50% excess weight loss.
